If we take for example the Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) map, we find that raw numbers mean nothing: what we can see here is the reflection of political action taken globally (read: in the North) to tackle the pandemic with lots of fearmongering. We could instead, from the same raw data, show a percentage of the population affected or killed by the virus in each country or province, and the result would be much less traumatic. If, on the contrary, this approach was taken to map out a normal flu or Malaria pandemic, then we’d have much to tell our politicians militarizing our daily life for a virus that’s not going to kill more than Malaria kills every year… But not in the same countries…
